BAR SONGS is a rock & roll musical comedy, in the tradition of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The film centers around a 30-year old alcoholic, over the course of one weekend, in Astoria, Queens.
The origins of the movie date back to the early 2000's, when Ryan (writer/director) was writing music and performing at bars in Wilmington, NC. As a kid in his early 20's (and loving it), most of the writing had to deal with drinking and getting into trouble. The songs tended to have an explicitly humorous flair and went over well with rowdier crowds.
It wasn't until 2007, at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, that some of those songs were worked into the narrative of a screenplay.
CUT TO: SEPTEMBER 2013 - After working as a freelance editor and sound recordist in New York, a tragic accident left Ryan with just enough money to make Bar Songs into a feature film.
With the help of producers, Scott Newberry (a fellow classmate from UNCSA) and Parin Sarasin (an ambitious young filmmaker, met on a chance ride back from Bonnaroo in 2012), production starts.
Along with lifelong friend and cinematographer/executive producer, Jonathan Ellison, production starts right before Thanksgiving.
15 days of soundtrack recording, 24 days of production, and countless days of prep and post later, Bar Songs is completed.

Working as an editor and sound recordist for 6 years, he finally produced and directed his first feature film, Bar Songs, in 2014. He has spent more time than he can remember watching bad TV, swilling booze, playing Ultimate Frisbee, and following the Detroit Pistons.
Jonathan has been working in motion and still images for over 15 years. He holds a degree in film production, completed a cinematography course hosted by the ASC, and has worked in some fashion in every on-set position from PA to director.
